Tips for the Wine Fair

Introduction

The Foire aux vins (or rather, Foires aux vins) offers wine lovers the chance to discover delicious little nuggets at unbeatable prices. Who hasn’t dreamed of such a scenario? To walk into your favorite supermarket and find THE rare gem for a pittance? Let’s see if it’s possible and try to work out a shopping plan!

First of all, unless you’re lucky, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to find real wines from winemakers in supermarkets during the Wine Fair. However, some chains do offer some nice references (such as Château Montus 2010 at Carrefour Market), so there’s always hope.

Of course, it’s best to avoid offers like “6 bottles bought = 6 bottles free” (and even more so offers like “1 bottle bought = 1 bottle free”), as these hide (very badly) wines whose stocks have yet to be sold out, and are generally good to throw away…

To avoid disappointment at the Foire aux vins, plan your purchases carefully: what will I buy? When will I drink the wine? Will I keep the wine for a few weeks/months, or several years? The answers to these questions will enable you to see more clearly and analyze the various Wine Fair catalogs.

Another tip: you may find some big names during the Foire aux Vins (Yquem, Latour, etc….), but these are generally not perfect deals.
